ADVISORY ON SCAM CALLS

*****

The High Commission of India has noticed some instances regarding the misuse of the High Commission's helpline number 0432585943. In these cases, people are receiving calls from the helpline number, where spammer pretends to be calling from immigration department/ Indian High Commission and seeking personal information.

High Commission of India encourage victims of the scam to immediately contact their financial institution (if affected) subsequently reporting the matter to the Australian law enforcement authorities.

Some other advice/options in relation to spoof calls is listed below:

  • Be wary of suspicious calls - Don't share personal or financial information with anyone you don't know or trust, even if they claim to be from a legitimate organisation.
  • Verify calls - If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and call the organisation back using the number listed on their website or a trusted source.
  • Don't answer unknown numbers - Consider allowing unknown calls to go to voicemail or sending them straight to voicemail.
  • Never provide any e-banking security codes to anyone
  • Don't provide a caller with remote access to your computer.
  • Report the incident to the local law enforcement authorities immediately.
